Some Life Lessons That Have Helped Me
by Ed Foreman

  • Believe that good things will happen. Expectations have a way of coming true.
  • Trust your instincts. If you “feel” something is right or wrong, it probably is…keep your values above reproach!
  • When something happens by chance, follow up. Lucky people tend to notice and act on good things that occur by happenstance.
  • When bad things happen, look for the bright side; i.e., “what did I learn from that?” or, “how do I keep it from happening again?” Don’t dwell on it, move on!
  • Always be on the lookout for opportunity…if you are “downsized” out of a job, look at it as an “opportunity” to do what you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the guts to do. You are not your Job…You are a valuable asset of education, experience and enthusiasm, marketable in many areas of endeavor.
  • Accept responsibility for yourself…your health, your livelihood and your happiness. No one else should be held responsible for your dissipation, ineffectiveness or negativity…except you! You have no entitlement to physical, financial and mental care except by your own individual initiative.
  • Failure is a CHOICE made by the undisciplined. Failing to meet your objectives, regardless of what they are, is a choice, because something else has been given higher priority. If you fail, it is because you choose to fail.
  • You don’t “catch” depression and you don’t “catch” happiness…you “create” it by the “thoughts” you put into your mind. Carefully choose what you read, listen to, and the people with whom you associate.
  • Don’t look for love in the wrong places…not just romantic love, but the love of “stuff.” Stuff is O.K., but understand the delusion of “I’ll be happy when I have this or that…or, when I live over there, or when this happens.” Happiness is a state of mind in which our thinking is pleasant most of the time.
  • Go on a mental diet…turn off the T.V., radio and newspaper…”nourish” your mind with a great book, CD, or upbeat, instrumental music…take a walk, listen to the birds, breathe and observe the beauty of nature.
  • Write a one sentence “MISSION” for your life and “see it realized” by your “VISION” of yourself and your life as it is being accomplished.
  • THINK about what you THINK ABOUT…and if you catch yourself thinking about unhappiness, ill health and adversity, “change the channel” and think about what you want to happen!
  • If the horse dies, dismount. Don’t continue to pour money and effort into a lost cause.
  • Enjoy what you do. If you don’t, then “change” your attitude toward it or go do something else.
  • Don’t spend all you earn; save and invest, make your money work for you. Poor people spend it all and “live for the moment”…average people buy a home, pay their bills, establish a savings account and plan to retire as early as possible…wealthy people develop discipline, desire and dedication, invest their earnings to work for them, enjoy what they do and keep on doing it!
  • Live like you’re gonna’ make it to 100…wisely nourish and exercise your mind and body…make a whole bunch of happy memories to reflect upon…laugh, love and keep on living!
