What Would Steven Do?
by Vince Poscente

My brother Steven asked me the other day, “Why don’t you ever write about me?”

Here you go…

Find ways to be spontaneous. Work and play will be even more fun.

Think of the best parties you have been to. Was it a party planned in advance, like any New Year’s Eve party you’ve been to? Or was it something that just happened spontaneously? By springing spontaneous activities on your employees or work routine you will add more fun on the job.

My brother Steven is one of the most spontaneous people I know. Fun should be his middle name. But there is a significant twist. Rules to Steve are more of a guideline than regulations. Given his spontaneous nature, this combines for a list of fun, odd and entertaining moments.

A few weeks back… while passing the NASCAR race track, Steve took a turn towards the security gate. With dark glasses and a straight face Steve indicated that he was expected in the infield. As he was finishing his 120 mph first lap in his rental car, security caught up and escorted him out.

A few months back… Steve asked the TSA security official at the airport if anybody had ever been passed through the X-Ray machine. She said no. Without much thought (obviously), Steve lay down and was passed through the machine. Steve was traveling alone.

A few years back… a bunch of friends were on the dance floor. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Steve bolt across the dance floor and dive out the window. Seconds later he climbed back in the building and kept dancing.

A few decades back… on a date with his girlfriend, Steve was pulling up to the ticket booth at an outdoor drive-in theatre. Seconds before they pulled up to the window, Steve turned to his date and said, “Stare straight ahead and don’t say a word.” This was followed by Steven saying to the ticket taker, “Would I have to pay if my girlfriend was deaf and blind?” With a dumbfounded look on the attendant’s face, Steve paid for one and drove in.

Every organization or family should have a Steve in their midst…someone to be spontaneous and fun. Former CEO and President of SC Johnson and Nike said, “One of my jobs is to protect the crazies.” He knew that innovation came from the people that were spontaneous.

Say what you will about Steve’s sense of judgment, he is fun to hang with, he is my brother and I love him for who he is.

Find ways to be spontaneous.

If you get stuck, ask yourself, what would Steven do? (Followed by a few more questions about the law, your own safety, getting other people into trouble, etc.)

Until next week keep your wits about you.
