Start the New Year Energized, Invigorated, & Loving Life!
by Doug Nielson This brief article will give 3 simple ideas you can apply immediately to ignite your life. These ideas are simple, yet profound in their impact on your mind, body and spirit! The number one key to having an outstanding life is take care of yourself. First: Get Moving Stress is best processed by moving your body. Get some movement (exercise) on a daily basis. DON’T STOP READING YET. You may think that you don’t have time. Take heart, I will show you how. Purchase a pedometer. A pedometer is a little device that counts the number of steps you take. You can buy one at your local sports store for $5.00-$10.00 depending on the functions you want. Put the pedometer on and start counting all the steps you take during a normal day. The goal is to take (or work up to) 10,000 steps a day. At night when you come home you check your steps. If you are short of 10,000, get off your posterior and walk until you have accomplished 10,000 steps! This can be accomplished by walking in place in front of the TV, cleaning, wrestling or playing tag with your children, or shoveling your drive. While it is ideal to exercise at least 30 continuous minutes each day, living an active lifestyle is more important to health and stress reduction overall. Simple Actions: 1) Buy a pedometer today, 2) Get 10,000 steps daily. Second: Increase Your Drinking Habit (water that is). Most people operate in a persistent state of partial dehydration. Feeling tired, sluggish and having difficulty concentrating are a few of the symptoms. Also, many people drink diet drinks like they are going out of style believing that this quenches their body’s thirst. Unfortunately these drinks act as a diuretic, depleting the body of water. Some studies suggest that not getting enough water can be a contributing factor with heart disease. It is also considered an important factor in maintaining a healthy immune system. Seventy percent of our bodies are water! It makes sense to give your body the water it needs to operate at peak levels. The recommendation of drinking 64 ounces of water a day still holds true. Some suggest getting half your body weight in ounces of water is optimal. First thing in the morning, drink a large glass of water to flush your system and then throughout the day ensure that you get your water intake. If you are trying to lose or maintain weight, try drinking another glass prior to each meal. You will feel full more quickly and eat less. As you keep your water tank full, you will have more energy to meet the everyday demands of life. Simple Actions: 1) Drink a large glass of water first thing in the morning, 2) Drink at least 64 ounces a day (most glasses hold 12 oz, which means that you only need to drink 4 ½ more the rest of the day to achieve the ideal). Third: Take a Deep “BellyBreath” It’s a jungle out there. You need all the oxygen you can get! According to the American Lung Association, when you can’t breath, nothing else matters! I think they have a very good point. Next time you see an infant, notice how they breathe from their belly. Then the next time you see your boss notice how he/she breaths from the chest. Most of us do. In addition we slouch over, squish our lungs, and diminish our ability to get life giving oxygen. When you breathe short, shallow, chest centered breaths you actually activate the fight-flight mechanism in the brain. This in turn pumps adrenalin and other stress hormones into the body. Some people live in a constant mild state of fight-or-flight which depletes their body’s energy. For an added bonus, when you take a full deep “belly breath”, tell yourself to relax and recite a positive statement to help you Take Life by the Helm. Simple Actions: 1) Before you get out of bed, relax and take 3 full “belly breaths”, filling your mind with positive thoughts, 2) Throughout the day, remind yourself to take a full deep “belly breaths”. Set your watch alarm to remind yourself to breath on the hour. 3) When you go to bed, take 3 full breaths again suggesting to your mind to relax and feel positive emotion. Conclusion and Challenge These 3 ideas, when applied, can really energize and invigorate you. This new vitality can enrich each day and launch you on your way to becoming unstoppable.
