"Legendary Sports Attorney, Power Agent and Master Negotiator"
Leigh Steinberg Expertise: Sports • Entertainment • Negotiation • Marketing
Fee Range: $25,000 to $30,000
Location: California
The year was 1975 and Leigh Steinberg a college student studying law at UC Berkley had no idea that he was about to make history. Steinberg had agreed to represent quarterback Steve Bartkowski in his quest to play for the NFL.

Bartkowski was chosen with the first overall pick in the NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons and became NFL Rookie of the Year. The Falcons contract negotiated by Steinberg was the largest amount ever paid to an NFL draft and proved to be the impetus that would propel Steinberg to legendary status within an industry where the stakes are high.

During a remarkable career spanning 33 years as the nation’s leading sports attorney Leigh Steinberg has negotiated numerous record breaking contracts for other star athletes.
What distinguishes Steinberg from others within his profession is his desire for athletes to make a positive contribution to society. He insists that every contract negotiated for his players include clauses that require the athlete to give back. This allows the athlete to function as a positive role model by repaying the communities that helped shape them.. As a result, his clients have donated over $100 million to charities and scholarships nationwide.

Always one to practice what he preaches, Steinberg contributes his time and efforts to a variety of humanitarian causes including the Human Relations Commission, Children Now, Children’s Miracle Network, CORO Fellows Program, the Starlight Foundation and Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

Steinberg founded and underwrites the Steinberg Leadership Institute, a nationwide program run by the Anti-Defamation League preparing students to fight racism and inequality throughout the world. He has underwritten a series of summer camps in Orange County run by the OC Human Relations Commission that bring middle school and high school children from different ethnic groups together for leadership training.

Setting the standard for athlete marketing and positioning, Steinberg has helped pioneer the convergence between the sports and entertainment industries. He has developed original television and film content for major networks including, Fox Television, Warner Brothers Studio, ABC Entertainment and HBO.

He has been at the forefront of the Internet revolution, creating and building sports websites, strategically aligning his firm with ESPN’s Sportzone and developing online marketing courseware for professionals and students alike.

Steinberg has lent his marketing expertise to the video game software business and serves as a member of the Board of Directors for two software manufacturers.

In 1998 sharing 25 years of experience in the sports business world Steinberg penned the best-selling book, Winning with Integrity, providing readers insight on how to improve their lives through non-confrontational negotiation.

With experience and resources unrivaled in sports representation, Steinberg is frequently sought out to act as a consultant on a variety of entertainment projects. He has received screen credit as a Technical Consultant on the feature films: “Jerry Maguire,” Oliver Stone’s feature, “On Any Given Sunday” and “For the Love of the Game,” starring Kevin Costner. He has also worked as a consultant for the HBO original series, “Arli$$” and serves as the title sponsor of the annual Newport Beach Film Festival

Programs With Brief Descriptions:
  • Negotiating Without Conflict
The ability to negotiate in a skillful manner can fundamentally alter the course of one’s life. Rather than approaching a negotiation as an unpleasant experience of apprehension or uncertainty, it should be looked at as an opportunity. After-all we are always negotiating. We negotiate over which movies to see, who should do the dishes, or who will pay the bill. High stakes negotiating in business is no different. It’s about getting what you want without destroying the other person’s position. This skill is invaluable when mastered.

  • Creating a Team with a Winning Culture
A winning culture is the collection of the positive attitudes, strong values, and equitable behaviors of a business' employees in an open working environment. When all of those components are in place a business will be able to successfully compete in the world of increasing competition. This is achieved by creating a culture of strong leadership, shared vision of objectives, and open effective communication. This will ensure long-term success and a fully engaged workforce for your organization. But most importantly, a team with a true winning culture will positively impact a business' bottom line.

  • Executive Leadership
In any industry, leadership is essential. Leaders can thrive at all levels of business whether it is as CEO or in an entry-level position. Employees need to be instilled with the confidence needed to become proactive in pursuing new and creative ways to approach business situations. In order to stay ahead of competition, leadership qualities need to translate into executive action. Improving leadership within an organization entails creating an environment where employees feel empowered to take the initiative.

  • Winning With Integrity
Winning, whether in sports or business is more than just coming out on top - it's about how you get there and the decisions you make along the way. A business model that does not embody strong moral character values is doomed to fail eventually. But sometimes the choices in front of you are not quite so easy. Here, Leigh will share the core values and principles that have allowed him to be so successful in business and in life while maintaining personal integrity.
