George Salpietro
"Simple Truths for Happiness, Satisfaction & Wellness"
George Salpietro Expertise: Motivation • Leadership • Managing Non-Profits • Managing Change
Fee Range: $5,000 to $10,000
Location: Connecticut
"I was almost 40 years old in the midst of a successful career with General Motors with all the responsibilities of a husband and father. In the space of three weeks, I was blind."

George Salpietro, Executive Director of the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, Inc., knows firsthand about adversity; specifically, the gripping fear of suddenly losing his sight. He also knows the thrill of regaining his zest for life and the joy of having a guide dog provide him with a renewed opportunity for freedom and independence.

He now serves as the head of Fidelco and his passion is bringing similar opportunities to other individuals who are blind.
Salpietro is a person who leaves a lasting impression. One-on-one, or in his presentations for audiences across the country, he speaks a few simple truths. He talks of light and dark, fear and exhilaration, and most importantly how people, including those with disabilities, can take control of their lives. And inevitably, he leaves those who meet or hear him impressed, empowered and uplifted.

Salpietro has received numerous awards, including being honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow, the Lions Club's highest level of recognition. He has one daughter, Stacy, a grandson, Russell, and lives with Marie, his wife, in Colchester, Connecticut.

"Today, I am a person fulfilled. And my greatest reward is knowing that I help people who are blind regain their freedom and independence."

Programs and Brief Descriptions
  • "A Few Simple Truths"
Should we measure our success in how much money we earn, how big our house is or what kind of car we drive? I suggest that we should not. You'll never make enough money, your house will never be big enough and your car will never be nice enough. Rather, it is a few simple truths... the basic things in life... that really make the most sense and should be most important to us. The recognition of a few simple truths in your life can lead you to a profound sense of happiness, satisfaction and wellness. Together, we'll uncover those truths and ways in which you can keep them with you for a lifetime.

  • "Finding Your Way Home"
Many of us are lost… lost on the path that our lives have taken and in our ability to find our way. But help is close by. However, it requires the realization that we often cannot make it on our own and must surrender ourselves to those things that can help redirect our minds and our hearts. In my case, it was God and a dog named "Karl". Come with me on a journey of discovery and walk with me as we retrace our steps to freedom and independence.

Along the way, you will find landmarks, some familiar, some new, that can help in finding your own way home.

  • "Changes and Challenges"
When I lost my vision at age 39, it was a life-changing experience; one that had the potential to take me into what can be described as the depths of disability. If that had happened, I would have been one among many people with disabilities who disappear from life and from the lives of their friends and loved ones. But that didn't happen. With the help of my family and a guide dog from the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, I found my way. I'd like to share my story with you because I know you'll take from it ways in which you can deal with the changes and challenges in your own lives.
Client Testimonials:
"I am writing you for two reasons; recently I was at a DMR conference where you were the key note speaker; I felt compelled to contact you and tell you how motivated I felt after I listened to you. On the day that I listened to you I was feeling especially bad for myself. I now take in all that I can on a moment to moment basis. I have etched my daughters smile into my memory, named every freckle on her face and take advantage of all the gifts that God has given me. I thank you for your honesty when you speak publicly and for the encouragement that you gave to all that attended on that day."
-- M. Kelley-Watson, Community Residences, Inc.

"Association Resources (AR) holds a quarterly meeting for its entire staff. The purpose of these meetings is to meet AR's commitment to professional development and to provide a forum to discuss issues of importance.
On March 9, 2006, George Salpietro, executive director of the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, was our guest presenter. We feasted on George's energy and positive outlook and we learned from his example. He left us motivated and uplifted. To rephrase one of George's simple truths, we might forget his words, but we will never forget how he made us feel."
-- Martin Rotblatt, Account Executive
